Among the fascinating topics covered are: how mutual-aid societies in America, Great Britain, and Australia provided their members with medical care, unemployment insurance, sickness insurance, and other social services before the welfare state; how private law, known historically as the law merchant, is returning in the form of arbitration; and why the rise of neighborhood associations represents the most comprehensive privatization occurring in the United States today.

The volume concludes with an epilogue that places the discoveries of The Voluntary City within the theory of market and government failure and discusses the implications of these discoveries for theories about the private provision of public goods. Many unorthodox ways of life were allowed during the early days of the California Gold Rush. The demands of the times and a great influx of races forced tolerance. San Francisco became notorious for its lawlessness, its gambling casinos, and its bordellos and madams. The Barbary Coast became a part of California's history and San Francisco's heritage. The Barbary Coast was an area near the waterfront that law enforcers found almost impossible to control. Those who operated establishments there, refused to abide by the gradually encroaching law and order being established by the other parts of town. For along the Barbary Coast any vice could be bought. There also, a little-known vice guarded with great secrecy were the male houses of prostitution. Some of the more clandestine operations offered young boys. Most of these boys had few means of survival other than their wits and bodies. Known as peg-houses, the places provided young boys to those who were able to meet the extraordinary prices. These houses were often operated by unscrupulous and ruthless men who provided the boys with drugs, thereby chaining them by their addictions. These could become hopeless addicts unable to function as anything but subservient slaves to their masters.An international slave trade supplied these houses with boys who were enticed or kidnapped from all over the world. Peg-houses were common in the Orient. The custom was brought to the West by seamen who had grown fond of such pleasures. Boys were trained to service customers by wearing wooden peg of gradually increasingly size. They would be offered for selection while sitting on stools that displayed the properly sized peg protruding from the bottom to indicate the size penis that each boy had been trained to accommodate. This is the story of Santiago Cali, one such boy.

Named after an archaeological site discovered in 1951 in Zhengzhou, China, the Erligang civilization arose in the Yellow River valley around the middle of the second millennium BCE. Shortly thereafter, its distinctive elite material culture spread to a large part of China's Central Plain, in the south reaching as far as the banks of the Yangzi River. The Erligang culture is best known for the remains of an immense walled city at Zhengzhou, a smaller site at Panlongcheng in Hubei, and a large-scale bronze industry of remarkable artistic and technological sophistication.

This richly illustrated book is the first in a western language devoted to the Erligang culture. It brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines, including art history and archaeology, to explore what is known about the culture and its spectacular bronze industry. The opening chapters introduce the history of the discovery of the culture and its most important archaeological sites. Subsequent essays address a variety of important methodological issues related to the study of Erligang, including how to define the culture, the usefulness of cross-cultural comparative study, and the difficulty of reconciling traditional Chinese historiography with archaeological discoveries. The book closes by examining the role the Erligang civilization played in the emergence of the first bronze-using societies in south China and the importance of bronze studies in the training of Chinese art historians.
